Drugs and Love

The fourth long exam in perception comes within 2 days. To non-psych majors, Perception or PSYCH 135 is the special course where students map out the brain pathways of the five basic sensations ( hearing, seeing, etc). In other words, we try to explain all of the things that we perceive through complex brain mechanisms.
Before my hippocampus( the brain part responsible for semantic and declarative memories) hits information overload, I just want to share and relate some facts on what I have read so that in a way, I can store some information to my amygdala ( responsible for emotional memory).
For the lay people, it is just metaphorical when poets and authors say that people fall when they are in love. As a matter of fact, people rise when they are in love ( FG, David).
People rise when they are in love, much like people rise when they are engaged in drugs.
Researchers found that the right ventral tegmental area and the right caudate nucleus in the brain ( areas that govern pleasure, motivation and reward ) of people deeply in love are stimulated. The relation with addiction is that these areas are only stimulated similarly when people are induced to addictive drugs like cocaine.
So what do you mean by rising in love? Researchers found that for both people who are in love and are addicted to drugs, the dopamine levels ( dopamine is the neurotransmitter associated with pleasure) of the said brain areas are RISING.
I bet all educated people know about the facts on drug addiction right? Drug addiction is hard to extinguish because for some reasons, like the withdrawal syndrome. Associative Learning theories taught me that an unassociated/unconditioned stimulus will trigger an unconditioned response and that an associated/conditioned stimumulus will trigger an associated/conditioned response.
The paragraph above explains that drug addiction is hard to extinguish because the drug has primarily stimulated the right ventral tegmental areas and right caudate nucleus with its other associated stimulus( i.e. needles you injected, the room where you take drugs), which will trigger the the same craving response.
Just like love. People still keep thinking of that person who have already rejected them, socially excluded them, broke up with them ( or broke them up, or broke them down, whatever you’d like to use it), cheated them, dumped-the-hell-out of them, because of the activation of the said brain areas when they see, hear, feel, smell or sense anything that reminds them of that person.
So the question is, how will one person stop the rise of dopamine levels in the right ventral tegmental area and right caudate nucleus instantly ? YOU CAN’T!. Unless you find another kind of drug to replace its effects or you extinguish by force all the associated stimuli of that drug. While you can’t do it now, enjoy the addiction when the right drug comes. hahahaha!
Makes sense, eh? Mao diay. Enough ! Magtuon nakog sekular, sheeeeeet.!

The Church, Graft anf Corruption and the Reproductive Health Bill
September 23rd, 2008 by kurt-jumpman23
Last Sunday, I went to church to reconnect my lost time with my Creator ( after pila ka weeks and months of voluntary absence). At the Santo Niño Parish, I lit up 5 red candles and solemnly communicated my pleas and petitions. After that, I decided to attend the mass.
The priest celebrant, who seem young and inarticulate, talked about the mass’ theme ( salmo responsoryo ba na or eucharist? ). Basta, it was about that the People should be generous, citing examples on how Christ as always is the Great Provider. In a sudden turn of his speech, he became political. Then, I noticed that debate on the Reproductive Health Bill is still raging and flaming hot.
Citing a certain study conducted by some pseudo institution ( forgot the name) ,the celebrant stressed that based on the results, the country’s main root problem is graft and corruption, NOT overpopulation. He added that there is widespread poverty in our country because of mismanagement of resources by corrupt bureaucrats and the powerful few. He may be right. But the point of the Reproductive Health Bill is not just to decrease poverty in some areas, but to protect the overall health of our nation as a whole, especially the reproductive and economic health of poor families and of the women.
His point is that the Reproductive Health Bill should not be approved legistatively, since according to the Church and that study, poverty exists mainly because of graft and corruption, ignoring the existence of overpopulation. In my opinion, he identified graft and corruption as the main culprit so that he could connect it with the mass’ theme, which is that people should be generous of our resources.
In the midst of his speech, Bagyong Nina made her presence felt, so I went down and lit some candles again and prayed by my solitude. Never finished the mass, didn’t take the eucharist, and went home straight after singing Our Father.
To sum it up, I believe that not all Church’s Policies are necessarily God’s Policies. I also believe that the opinion of the Church is not the opinion of the people. I forgot to pray to our Great Listener that Sunday, that somehow, HE could help us convince HIS agents to see the bigger societal picture.
May God Bless Me and You and this Country.

Running out of patience, pag bad ka lagot ka- LOLZ!
March 1st, 2008 by kurt-jumpman23
Some Filipinos don’t want to express their sentiments on the streets. Protesting constantly is too leftist-esque and too Stalinist. But like most other Filipinos, I want to express my activism on net, therefore I am a web activist on friendster and multiply. And I want to give a shit of information regarding the current political issues.
The Arroyo Administration can’t seem to get over controversies. Every week, every month, there will always be an ethical issue that will scratch Arroyo’s midget knees to the ground, problem is her two arms ( PNP and AFP ) will scratch them off.
When I was still a freshman student, the Hello Garci Scandal was at its peak. It was from June to July 2005. By that time, I realized how UP was known to be a bastion of academic freedom. It’s different from what you know on TV and newspapers, the activism is alive glowing, spearheaded by the NKE.
On GMA’s ” I AM SORRY” speech on national television, I perceived her as guilty. Her apology was a cue that she did accepted making a call with Virgi Garci. I prophesized that by August, she will be ousted. I was wrong. FVR and JDV saved her. It was so close.
Since then, my opinion on the attempts to oust her is so fucking useless. Because, she has the military, she has the support of major businessmen, the peso was galvanized, and she has the congressmen. She also has the argument which favors her that what happens in Imperial Manila is not the same on the other provinces. Ooooh that Dominant and Discriminative Manila.
But I was not expressing my lungs out for her to resign. Because, as a human being, she is not perfect. As a citizen of this country, I was giving her the benefit of the doubt that if she may have won the 2004 elections by the slimmest of margins, she should have prove it that she really was the legitimate president by the making administrative
functions to work at its optimum efficiency. She should curtail the
rate of corruption. She should improve the lives of many Filipino
through her Economics expertise.
But as Sir Cinco, our management professor in UP said, GMA is a good manager of the country. But she aint a good leader. To be a good leader, one must collectively and unanimously inspire all the Filipino population. She is just good in allocating and managing all our country’s resources to the pork barrels of our congressmen. But there is economic vibrancy as of late, so I let GMA prove that she backs up her plans.
Unfortunately, the ZTE scandal made me withdraw my trust of the
present administration. If GMA can not control her husband, how can she
control the angst of the nation? Filipinos should realize that they
have learned helplesness in the process. Corruption will never go away.
What I’m focused is how did the government tried to control it. If I
learn hopelessness in our system, I should have studied nursing right
now. But I love this country. There is still hope.
Miss G, our psychology super proffesor, analyzed that for an EDSA
People Power to succeed, the flow of events must reach the tipping
point. The tipping point is when Filipinos will have enough of it,
including the AFP and PNP servicemen. That’s why in Hello Garci
Scandal, it never reached that point. But as far as I’m concerned, the
ZTE scandal is nearing the tipping point. I again will predict that GMA
will be ousted in less than a year from now.
I just hope that Mr. Jun Lozada is as credible and as influential as Mr.
Chavit Singson and Ms. Clarissa Ocampo during the Erap’s impeachment
trial.
I just hope that Joker Arroyo will get out of
that ugly shelf. Come on dragon! Pag bad ka, lagot ka! Right? I voted
for you. Be yourself, be your usual vocal self.
I just hope that Noli De Castro will produce more indepent statements
regarding issues. So what If he is just an intellectual light weight,
he’ll just served Arroyo’s remaining two years. And by 2010, It should
be Roxas or Villar to call the shots.
I have never joined a rally. When the tipping point comes, it will be my first time. Soon.

LOVE: the game of Basketball
February 20th, 2008 by kurt-jumpman23
KOBE BRYANT lost hundreds of games, was accused as a rapist, was vilified as a ball hog and uncoachable, but he’ll always try to win championships… u know wat? I’m as hard headed as KOBE BRYANT!
The difference is, KOBE BRYANT plays for the love of the GAME.
I play for the game of LOVE. I want to play in the basketball COURT.
You are the coach… I AM AT YOUR MERCY…. LET ME PLAY. I play to win, I don’t play to lose. Just let me play it right , I don’t mind the points and stats.
Sometimes, you just have to understand… that I’m as ruthless and competitive as Kobe, though I’m not as skilled as him in the way I execute the methods to attain our goals. Kobe wants to win championship. I want to win YOU, just like how Dwayne Wade recklessly drives to the basket, flying and slashing without minding his body. I don’t care what’s left for me even the though the probability of suffering injuries is very high, I only care about you.
CONVERSE: ” Fall seven times, stand up eight. ” I fell 2 weeks ago, so that leaves me with another 6 tries? NOPE, I hope I can stand up again as twice as many as I fall.
Just like as how Steve Nash tries to win the NBA title: playing brilliant, fast and relentless offense without a drop of defense, like how he ‘changed’ the pasts’ low post kind of game to today’s ideal fast break tempo, I will do that. I hope I can be like Steve Nash… loved and liked as time passes by ( FYI: Steve Nash was not as lovable when he was still with the Dallas Mavericks with Dirk Nowitzki).
You’re the only MVP, the most valuable person.

Trillanes is Joker than Joker Arroyo, A Flip Flopper without Havaianas
December 1st, 2007 by kurt-jumpman23
” In closing, let me stress that I do not belittle Trillanes’ goals for change. Reforms, indeed, our nation urgently needs. But, as I said in another column (July 8, 2007), “means are as important as ends.” Our people elected Trillanes so he could pursue reforms in accordance with constitutional methods, no longer with military brawns.”
The above paragraph is the last paragraph written by the previous Chief Justice Artemio Panganiban in his With Due Respect, Inquirer Column.
Very well said,right?
Some Filipinos view Senator Trillanes as the modern day Emilio Aguinaldo. Way back in Philippine History, Aguinaldo had the exclusivist, internal numbers to beat Andres Bonifacio for top honcho of the Katipunan Movement. Then it changed our history. He robbed Bonifacio. Bonifacio should have beem our very first Filipino President.
The similarities? Senator Trillanes used the 9 millions votes of trust of the Filipinos , which were intended to make reforms under the constitutional frame. Like Aguinaldo, Trillanes robbed the trust of the Filipino voters. Both of them both manipulated their positions. Aguinaldo did it because the Katipunan Elections were held in his home province, Cavite. Trillanes did it using his position as a senator.
Trillanes was so determined to wage war to GMA, using the media at first, while waiting for his troops to save him. Then he flipflopped. He wanted the media people out, because as he said it, he will not live with his conscience if media people die. Really? How about killing Gloria? Would he still live with his conscience?
He can’t talk peace and reforms with guns on his hand. By the end of the day, he embarrased himself by failing another mutiny. If he wants reforms with his methods, he should not use the Senate as a military bank. Senator Trillanes is Joker than Senator Joker Arroyo, a Flip Flopper without Havaianas! LOL!

GLOBAL WARMING
October 24th, 2007 by kurt-jumpman23
Think about it, what have humans done to mother earth?
Is Global Warming Really a threat? it is… but not immediately. But after reading sad news about the wild fires spreading in San Diego , South California,( one of the most humid states in the worst carbon dioxide emitting country on Earth)the threat is getting sooner and closer.
My classmate’s psychological construct about global warming got an almost .95 cronbach’s alpha reliability. Which means that behaviors in relation to our global warming awareness as preached by Al Gore, is universal, consistent among humans. A matter if they conserve or not conserve energy. PRO or ANTI GLOBAL WARMING PREVENTION.
Whatever the case, our behaviors should be PRO GLOBAL WARMING PREVENTION from now on.

August 17th, 2007 by kurt-jumpman23
Note: Part time writing work nako ni.:)
Pamahalaang Commonwealth Ang nagpasimuno
at iba pang katutubong lingwahe.
Samakatuwid,
At
Tagalog an gating gagamitin.
Gaya

responsibility
July 20th, 2007 by kurt-jumpman23
hahay!
I would have been not too stressed out if I was voted for this position.
My case was a VOLUNTARY ONE since NO ONE was around for voting, and for the fact that I want to accompany a blockmate, who was also being voted for a position accidentally( mas early).
Demands from the higher officers and demands from what I represent are what I carry.
As we grow old we near our final days in college, we have to be more responsible.
Damn. Anybody hates responsibility. Me too. But What sucks, only very few are genuinely willing to cooperate when we assume this type of responsibility.
If you want to find and access social help from social networks in the future, we must cooperate. Or we will have the type of difficulty NEXT YEAR the present senior batch is facing.

DO SOMETHING and DO IT NOW Butuanons and Agusanons!
May 22nd, 2007 by kurt-jumpman23
Copied from Armelo Beluan:
I’ll just reword or rephrase what I’ve
been rambling about all along, ma sa
friendster or sa inuman. I’ll make it
this time clear as crystal. (Pero
please react naman dito sa friendster
because mahirap makipagtunggali sa
texting.)
What were my observations so far:
1. A true democracy is based on a
strong middle class — strong in the
sense that it is the majority.
2. A democracy based on the poor
majority is mob rule. Do I have to
explain this? They have a tendency to
sell out their votes. And if one is
hungry, one cannot really participate
in any debate, much less in a
discussion about nationalism.
3. Ok, the impoverished may sense a
iota of nationalism in them but it’s
the I’m-really-a-nationalist-and-
Pimentel-is-really-a-good-lawyer-but-I-
want-some-free-beer kind of
nationalism.
4. By selling out their votes, they
really make a statement. A strong one,
at that. And it’s for us to figure
out. I’ve been trying to figure that
out for years. Ha, it turned out to be
commonsensical: Gutom e. You vote with
your stomach.
5. Some of the middle class, in
collusion with the high class, are
part of the political/ruling class.
Man, this has implications. It means
that the minority middle class is
doing something hardcore and obscene
to the impoverished majority to
preserve the whole setup or crap. The
middle class keeps itself minor and at
once, also maintains the impoverished
majority.
5. I have a gut sense it is useless
for the middle class to influence the
elections by voting. The only purpose
of voting on the part of the middle
class is symbolic — that is, to make
a statement and to be a model of
participation. But statistically, in
our setup, it is useless. Hence, it
opted to influence the vote in some
other ways, legit or not legit.
6. Examples: vote-buying, block-
voting, special-interest lobbying,
assasinations, bomb threats, etc.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
my own message to the readers:
I know that the local election is over. But If you readers want a positive change in our Philippine politics, then do something for a better change.
We should not wait for the ELECTION-FEVER-INFECTED MONTHS that usually start months/weeks before the elections ( just like what happened recently) to act, express, complain and voice out our opinions on the government( national/local), on social and political issues.
It is not fair to just complain over and over and over again to our government officials . It is unfair to just complain only to the alleged output of the elections and alleged corruptions yet not doing anything to help government officials and most especially citizens themselves. You only “COMPLAIN”. Nothing more, nothing less and it stops there.
On my personal observation, it is not the politicians alone that should be blamed on the flows of our electoral system. And it is really unfair to blame them alone. The electorate, the voters should also blamed.
BEFORE, the politicians buy votes from the voters.
NOW, the voters sell their votes to the politicians.
There is no statistical data to support this claim, but I believe that the votes of vote-selling voters clearly outnumbers the votes of educated voters.
If you are/will be an EDUCATED VOTER, like YOU,like ME, like THEM, let US transform VOTE-SELLING VOTERS to be like us.
Our helplessness, let-them-do-it-all, Bahala-na-sila kind of thinking will only feed the the pockets and wallets of our power hungry politicians.
DO SOMETHING and DO IT NOW.
