Who Should Have been Our National Hero ?
November 26th, 2005 by kurt-jumpman23
ANDRES BONIFACIO
VS.
JOSE PROTACIO RIZAL
Historically, our teachers since our elementary years taught us that Dr. Jose Rizal is our national hero.
Indeed, Dr. Rizal, without a doubt was a very great Filipino. He was a doctor, a teacher, a writer, a novelist, a poet, etc. His two novels, NOli Me Tangere ( touch me not) and El Filibusterismo are two of the greatest novels ever produced by the human race. He was so intelligent that his elementary teacher didn’t have any lessons enough to taught him that’s why he went to Europe. He was a REFORMIST. During the Spanish Era, he wanted SPain to reform its policy in our country because of the increasing atrocities, corruption and degradation of our fellowmen. He fought for that vision through writing. His two novels enlightened the eyes of the foreign world about the Spanish inactions againsts the Filipinos. He wanted a peaceful policy of Spain in our country. Why? Because he both loved SPAIN and the PHILIPPINES. He was executed in Bagumbayan on charges in which he did not do; actions that were not justified by the penalty given.
While Rizal was a reformist, Andres Bonifacio is a revolutionary. Born from a poor family, his knowledge was not derived in a four walls of a classroom. He got it from the outside world, having read classic revolutionary and idealistic books. After centuries of foreign rule, he felt that Filipinos were being enslaved by the Kastila. He founded the KKK. He idolize Rizal but he did not like the idea of reformation. He wanted a revolution. A war that would test the Great blood of the Filipinos: ALL at once or nothing at all. While Rizal cautioned him that it would not be successful, he iniated the Cry of Pugadlawin which would lead to series of successful outburst of nationalistic pride. That was the start of the end of Spanish Rule. He was, no doubt, the bravest Filipino General. BUt unfortunately, a faction was created within the katipunan, the other which was led by EMilio Agunaildo, historically speaking the country’s first president. Bonifacio was executed by the hands of Agunaldo’s men for he was charged of treason. Shame on AGUINALDO!!!!! If he was not executed, he could have been our first president of the republic! And maybe the Americans will not have set their foot on our shores.
But during the American Occupation, the americans taught the great philosophy of Rizal which is education for all. This was a plan that was made successful. It was because in Rizal’s ideas, they would get the heart and trust of the Filipinos for the triumph of their imperialization. Because they thought that our country is strategically a great site in ASia for them to be a complete world power. If they have employed Bonifacio’s ideas of revolution, they knew that it would do more harm to them, less for the Pinoys. What a damned MISEDUCATION!
Most pinoys today regard Rizal as the greatest Filipino ever, greater than Bonifacio. Only in the Philippines that the revolutionary hero was not the national hero, unlike in other countries. But to Bonifacio’s equally great contributions as much as Rizal did for our country, he should have enjoyed the praises that Rizal does nowadays. They are EQUALS! The national estimation should be the same.
( Only in UP should you learn to know more about this historical knowledge. Some non-UP Students may want to try in another way, but for UP Students, it is just a matter of attending classes )
