The Values of Literature in the Modern World
Modern day literature is as important as other classical readings.
We are living in a modern world. We are at a time of “microchip domination”. This is not the famous Greek and Roman Ages where pieces of art were done honorably and gloriously. Nor, it’s not the Renaissance period when the Arts achieved its highest peak. But no matter what period we are in the timeline of history, literature will always be a significant and influential force in shaping our lives. For literature helps us to be what we are: to be HUMAN.
The following are, for this writer, the things/values that modern literature shows to its readers after I had read Robert Cole’s The Humanities and Human Dignity, Thomas de Quincey’s The Literature of Knowledge and Literature of Power and Loren Eisley’s The Illusion of Two Cultures (all of which are magnificent essays).
Modern literature tells readers to be critical. Modern essayists like Coles, deQuincey and Eisley were open-minded. In their works, I noticed that they are very vocal why some people regard the humanities as something like a very unimportant institution of having knowledge. They argue, that the people who follow the humanities are doing things that scholars could not (though Eisley said that the division of the humanities and the sciences is just an illusion). Modern literature also teaches us to be open to criticisms.
Modern literature educates. For some beginners, reading essays, novels, short stories and epics teaches them how to write something like the ones they have just read. And for some, modern literature evokes emotions while reading a piece. Just like reading Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code. The three essayists I mentioned liked to compare and contrast and describe in their works. One will learn different writing styles to arouse emotion.
Modern literature tells us to be creative and imaginative. We should use our mind, not the brain. We are humans, we have this rare capacity to think and feel at the same time. We should use it more. There is nothing wrong living for/with dreams and fantasies. And to in the words of Eisley, every man should recognize that there is a realm of nature beyond the nautue that we know. For the sciences cannot answer completely the most complex questions that still exist, though they tried. These are answerable by faith. We only just have to believe and imagine.
Modern literature encourages us to communicate. Essays, short stories, novels, and epics are most of the time, mediums of expressing what the writer feels and think. They should be correct usage of terms and language so that there would be a connection between the reader and the writer.
Modern literature obliges us to search for the truth and fight for it. Demanding questions and unfounded criticisms will be there, but every writer should be ready. A writer’s piece of literature should be unique and irreplaceable. One should not be ashamed of collecting ideas from others, as long as you cite where and from whom you got such information and give them credit.
Modern literature warns us of the influence of money, which is a creation of modern science according to Eisley. He said that the human min becomes more attractive to wealth because the wealth of nature is being transferred and becomes visble and attainable. As a consequence, artists and writers alike strive for money, which in effects dilutes their pure imagination of beauty and perfection.
Most importantly, modern literature reminds us that we are humans and that we should be humans in our actions. Man imagines. Man should live life to the fullest. As Coles had said, we should have a moral, philosophical and spiritual sense of this world. De Quincey added that literature restores the ideals of justice, hope, truth, mercy and retribution. And for Eisley, being a man touches the hidden strings of pity, searches our hearts and makes us sensitive to beauty and experience.
These values that modern day literature is beneficial to us. It is just about acknowledging, using and living up with the values this writer has mentioned.

NEW YORK (CNN/SI) — The NBA has seen its share of great players and they will all tell you that there is no greater compliment than to be honored and recognized by your peers.
During his 13 years in the NBA, Michael Jordan did things on the basketball court that those before and after him may never see again. Many of the NBA’s 50 greatest players agreed that No. 23 may go down in history as the best to ever play the game.

Isa ka Teorya Kung Aha Nigikan ang Nilagpang
Atong ma-ingon nga mga Pilipino kay ma-utokon. Kay ila gamiton ang mga maski unsa-unsa nga butang na ila makit-an para sa iyang kalipayon Kung unsa naa sa ilang palibot, ilang gamiton. Kay ang pagkaon sa mga Pinoy kay isa ka pamaagi sa iyang pag-interact sa iyahang palibot, sa iyahang kapwa ug sa mga grasya nga gihatag sa Ginoo (Fernandez, Food and the Filipino ).
Tinuod ni sa pagkaong nilagpang. Gikan sa amoang mga sources, daghan ang lugar kung aha nigikan kining pagkaona, naay niingon na nigikan sa Bicol, sa Leyte, ug sa Cebu. Mao sad nga lahi-lahi pud ang pamaagi pagluto sa nilagpang tungod kay lahi pod ang mga sagol na natural na nigikan sa mga lugar..
Sa Bikol, ang pagluto sa nilagpang kay pinaagi sa paghumol sa sinugbang manok/isda sa gata sa lubi.
Gikan sa Bicol, niabot sa Leyte kining pagkaona. Pero saa Leyte, lahi usab ang pamaagi. Dili gata ang ila gigamit kundi suka. Ang mga lamas na isagol kay igisa pa uban sa isda/manok.
Ug gikan na pod sa Leyte, niambak napod kini sa Cebu. Sa Cebu, adunay pag-usab sa pamaagi sa paghimo.Ang mga lamas ug ang nakunis-kunis na unod sa manok/isda kay ehumol sa suka. Amoa kining nasayran sa mga impormasyon sa mga tao na gikan sa Lupa, Compostela, Cebu.
Unsa ang Nilagpang ?
Usa ka sud-an nga “SINUGLAW” or sinugbang kinilaw. Paghuman pagsuba sa isda/manok, imo dayon ini ikilaw. Kinihanglan dili jud mawagtang ang sili sa pagsagol kay mao kini ang nakalahi sa uban pang mga sud-an.
Ang mao-mao nga termino aning nilagpang kay ang ginatawag na KILAWIN.
Mga Taong Sagad Mukaon sa Nilagpang
Ang sagad mukaon niining pagkaona kay ang mga MASA kay sinuglaw raman kining pagkaona ug barato ra.
Ang laing pundok sa mga tao na mukaon sab niini kay ang mga lumolopyo sa lugar kung asa kini nisulbong.
METODOLOHIYA

Pamaagi sa Pagluto:
1. Pabagahon ang uling
2. Isugba ang manok for 20-30 mins
3. Kunis-kunison ang nasugbang manok
4. Ibutang sa plato/tupperware ang nakunis-
kunis na manok
5. Ibubo ang suka sa bowl nga plato
6. Timplahan ang suka pina-agi sa pagsagol sa mga lamas ug asin niini
8. Ibutang ang nakunis-kunis nga sinugbang manok sa tinimplahang suka
9. Puwede na daun kan-on
KONKLUSYON UG REKOMENDASYON
Ang mga sagol ani nga sud an na nakalahi ug lasa sa uban pang pagkaona kay ang mga mahalang nga lamas ug ang suka. Kinahanglan gayod nga dapat masugba ang maski unsa nga karne, isda man o manok.
Kini nga pagkaona, pwede kan-on magkinamot gawas kung hugaw ang kamot sa ga prepara.
Kini nga pagkaon-na pwde maluto kung kanus-a gustohon ug ma preserba kini kung maibutang kini sa refrigerator.
Dali rapod ug dili kayo lisod ang pagluto niini.
Mukabat ra ug 80 pesos ang magasto sa paghimo aning pagkaona para sa 4 ka tao.

sulagma: an idigenous concept

ANG PROBLEMA UG ANG IYANG KASANGKARAN
PASIUNA
Daghan kaayo panghitabo sa kinabuhi sa isa ka tao ang dili jud klaro ma-explain sa Agham. Mysteriosong panghitaboa. Isa na ani ang ginatawag nga “sulagma”.
Unsa man ang “sulagma”? Isa kini ka Cebuano na konsepto na kaparehas sa Ingles nga konsepto na gitawag na “Coincidence”. Isa kini na kaagi sa kinabuhi sa isa ka tawo na ang pagtuo niya sa duha ka panghitabo kay planado diay pero sa tinuod lang, aksidente ra. Pero kung planado man, ang atong makagagahom na Ginoo ang gaplano ato o di kaha isa sa mga trabaho sa atong utok nga dili pa jud masabtan ug tarong. Matud pa sa mga katigawangan, “ ang sulagma ang pagduyog sa panahon”.
Matud pa ni Carl Jung, isa ka maayong Psychologist nga taga-gawas, na ang sulagma kay tinuod na mahitabo sa atoang kinabuhi. Ingon niya, may mga tawo na mahadlok mu-amin nga naay sulagmaaong panghitabo sa ilang kinabuhi kay tawagon sila nga “superstitious”, “traditional” ug “native”. Pero kining mga panghitaboa, dili lang daw ni tsamba. Naa daw ni buot ipasabot.

Magtuki kami sa konsepto na gamit ang deskriptiv na pamaagi. Gusto namo na mu-usbong , magpabilin ug magamit kining na pulong dili lang sa mga katigulangan kundi pati sad sa mga kabatan-onan. Gusto namo mahibaw-an ang ilang mga ideya niining pulonga.
SAYSAY SA MGA PROBLEMA
Kami nagapangutana sa 120 ka tawo sa Lutopan,Toledo City; Cordova, Cebu ; Tres de Abril, Labangon, Brgy. Kamputhaw, Brgy. Lahug ug Colon Street, Cebu City para matin-aw namo kung unsa jud ang konseptong sulagma para sa ila.
Gipangutana namo sila una sa ilahang relihiyon, edad ug seks. Amo gibahin and edad sa duha, ang mga batan-on ( 30 anyos pa-ubos) ug ang mga naay edad (31 anyos pataas), ug ang relihiyon ( katoliko ug di-katoliko).
